Avery County
Avery County, North Carolina is home to famous
mountain peaks like Grandfather, Beech and Sugar. It
has the highest county seat in Eastern America
(Newland, elevation 3,621 ft.), the highest incorporated
town in Eastern America (Beech Mountain, elevation 5,506
ft.), and is known as the "Christmas tree capital of
the world."

Banner Elk
is located in the northwest quadrant of Avery County
in the Appalachian Highlands 3,739 feet above sea
level (Banner Elk Development Plan, 1967). High
peaks and rugged ridges surround the town. This
mountainous area in many respects has stronger
historic and cultural ties with the neighboring
mountainous regions of Tennessee and Virginia than
with all other regions of North Carolina. The area
is beautiful during all seasons of the year. Fall
foliage produces a dazzling panorama of color. The
area is famous for its flora and fauna.
Rhododendron, mountain laurel, flame azalea, and
wild flowers are abundant. Bear, deer, and other
wildlife inhabit the forests that surround Banner
Elk (Cooper, 1964).
Beech Mountain
- The Town of Beech Mountain, at an
elevation of 5506', is the highest town in eastern
America, and is situated in the northwestern North
Carolina mountains. The area is unique for its
visual beauty, its distinct four season climate and
its clean and safe environment. Beech Mountain
is home to skiing, golf, hiking, biking and other
unique year-round activities. People come to
visit and stay a lifetime!
